Dr. Jennifer Shapiro
Jennifer Shapiro, PhD is a licensed clinical psychologist in California. She is one of the few clinicians that have expertise in the treatment of BOTH Eating Disorders AND Obesity. She enjoys working with patients and helping them recover from various issues associated with eating disorders, obesity, and weight management.
In addition to her practice, she is the Scientific Director at Santech, Inc in La Jolla, CA in which she directs various research studies aiming to improve mobile and wireless technologies for behavioral intervention. Given her love of working directly with patients, she has decided to maintain a practice so that she could continue with her passion of directly helping others overcome their struggles with disordered eating and related issues.
Prior to moving to San Diego, Dr. Shapiro was an Assistant Professor at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Department of Psychiatry, Eating Disorders Program. Dr. Shapiro held a caseload of patients with Anorexia Nervosa, Bulimia Nervosa, Binge Eating Disorder, Eating Disorders Not Otherwise Specified, and Overweight/Obesity across various levels of care including inpatient, partial hospitalization (day patient), and outpatient programs. She has expertise treating individuals from adolescent through adulthood and of various ages and ethnicities. She provides individual therapy as well as group therapy and has developed scientifically based group programs for Weight Management, Bulimia Nervosa, and Binge Eating Disorder. Dr. Shapiro has published numerous scientific papers on disordered eating and annually presents at international conferences including the Academy for Eating Disorders (AED), Eating Disorders Research Society (EDRS), Society for Behavioral Medicine (SBM), and The Obesity Society. She is a member of those organizations and is also the founder and chair of the Information Technology for the Treatment of Eating Disorders Special Interest Group of AED. She is also an ad hoc reviewer for several scientific journals.
