Many people suffer from disordered eating but do not fit neatly into the Anorexia Nervosa or Bulimia Nervosa Categories. These people are suffering and they do require treatment. People with disordered eating behaviors that resemble anorexia nervosa or bulimia nervosa but do not meet one or more essential diagnostic criteria may be diagnosed with EDNOS. Examples of EDNOS include:
- Individuals who suffer from emotional eating
- Individuals who regularly purge but do not binge eat
- Individuals who meet most criteria for anorexia nervosa but continue to menstruate
- Individuals who engage in binge eating and purging but not frequent enough to meet be diagnosed with bulimia (but they need help).
Again, one does not need to have a diagnosis of an eating disorder per se to determine that they have disordered eating and/or need treatment. |
